Kenya woke up to a second day of violent protests Friday as opposition supporters denounced preliminary results showing that incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta won Thursday's presidential election with 98 percent of the vote.

But the rerun of the country's bungled August election was marred by incidents. The leader of National Super Alliance opposition party, Raila Odinga, boycotted the vote, and his supporters in opposition strongholds did not participate as elections officials were unable to deliver voting materials.

“Regardless of what side you’re on, it's hard to have an election when one of the two candidates doesn't want to participate,” said photographer Andrew Renneisen. “And that is where the problem lies.”

Renneisen, an American freelance photographer based in Nairobi, has been documenting the protests, navigating between both sides. “Protesters have rocks, stones, bottles, and [authorities] are answering with tear gas, rubber bullets, water cannons, blanks and, at times, live rounds,” he said.

While his photos show structures burned to the ground, bloody protesters and soldiers on edge, Renneisen said the violence remains sporadic. “The whole country isn't burning, but in opposition strongholds you definitely have issues. The protesters are extremely loyal to ‘Baba,’ ” he said, referring to the affectionate name given to Odinga. “Whatever he says goes. If he said to stop, that's what would happen.”
